Fans around the world have been mourning the death of Michael Jackson video
Determining the cause of Michael Jackson's death could take several weeks, a coroner said, as fans continued to pay tribute to the singer.
An autopsy had been conducted but further tests were required that could take up to six weeks, the coroner said.
But he said foul play and trauma had been ruled out in the death of Jackson, who died on Thursday at the age of 50.
Entertainers and world leaders have all been paying tribute to the deceased entertainer.
Singers Madonna and Justin Timberlake praised his talent, while a spokesman for Barack Obama said that the US president saw Jackson as a "music icon".
'Additional testing'
Los Angeles County coroner's spokesman Craig Harvey said police had put a security hold on Jackson's case, limiting the amount of information that can be released.
LA County coroner's office statement following the autopsy
He said a three-hour autopsy had been held but the cause of death had been deferred.
"It means that the medical examiner ordered additional testing such as toxicology and other studies," Mr Harvey said.
The tests would take between four to six weeks, at which point he anticipated being able to close the case, he said.
Jackson had a history of health problems, and the singer's friends and associates said they had been concerned about his use of pain-killing drugs.
He collapsed at his Los Angeles home around midday on Thursday.
A recording of the telephone call made to emergency services has been released, in which the caller said Jackson was unconscious and had stopped breathing.
His personal doctor was trying to revive him, the caller said.

Tributes paid to Michael Jackson
The singer was pronounced dead two hours later at the UCLA medical centre in West Hollywood. Jackson's brother, Jermaine, said he was believed to have suffered a cardiac arrest.
Family lawyer Brian Oxman told US TV that he had been concerned about the star's use of pain relief medication.
He told ABC's Good Morning America programme that Jackson took prescription pain relief for injuries sustained earlier in his career.
"It caused him great pain. He just didn't like to feel such discomfort. He started taking pain medication. It became part of his life," he said.
The star had been due to stage 50 concerts at the O2 arena in London, beginning on 13 July.
Across the world, people have been voicing shock and disbelief at the news of his death. In Hollywood, thousands of people filed past his star on the Walk of Fame.
A White House spokesman said US President Barack Obama considered Jackson a spectacular performer, but said he felt parts of his life were "sad and tragic".
Former Beatle Paul McCartney described Jackson as a massively talented boy-man with a gentle soul.
Biggest seller
Jackson began his career as a child in family group The Jackson 5.
He went on to achieve global fame as a solo artist with smash hits such as Billie Jean and Bad.
Thriller, released in 1982, is the biggest-selling album of all time, shifting 65m copies, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

He scored seven UK number ones as a solo artist and won a total of 13 Grammy awards.
"For Michael to be taken away from us so suddenly at such a young age, I just don't have the words," said Quincy Jones, who produced Thriller, Bad and Off The Wall.
"He was the consummate entertainer and his contributions and legacy will be felt upon the world forever. I've lost my little brother today, and part of my soul has gone with him."
Jackson fans react to news of his death
The singer had been dogged by controversy and money trouble in recent years, becoming a virtual recluse.
He was arrested in 2003 on charges of molesting a 14-year-old boy, but was found not guilty following a five-month trial.
The star had three children, Michael Joseph Jackson Jr, Paris Michael Katherine Jackson and Prince Michael Jackson II.
Jackson's former wife Debbie Rowe is the mother of two of the children, and there is already speculation about who will gain custody of them.
He is survived by his mother, Katherine, father, Joseph and eight siblings - including Janet, Randy, Jermaine and La Toya Jackson.

Enchanting Yemen: A Country Largely Untouched by Tourism
"I taught myself as a kid," explains our trekking guide Abdullah, when we prudently inquire about his credentials in the face of a steep mountain ahead of us. "I tried this stone, and that rock, and every time I ventured a little bit farther. By now, I know that mountain inside out." Abdullah’s self-taught approach exemplifies Yemen’s response to its slowly growing tourist industry.
We are in the Manakha area, about a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Yemen's bewitching capital, Sana'a
with its beautifully decorated facades and windows; its narrow streets overflowing with the sounds of street vendors, produce sellers, honking cars, and mosques' calls to prayer; and not to forget, its colorful, always buzzing souks (markets) with their particular smells of spices and their numerous qat (leaves chewed for their stimulating effects) silver, and jambiya (traditional dagger) sellers who always have a welcoming "as-salaam alaikum" for those passing by.
Manakha, in the Haraz Mountains, is the antidote to Sana'a's hustle and bustle: extremely peaceful and serene, with crisp air, clear and spectacular vistas, and small, picture-perfect villages perching along a cliff, towering above a mountain summit, or glued against a giant rock. On our hikes, we now and then pass friendly villagers who undisturbed go about their daily chores, as has probably been done for centuries: veiled women washing their laundry and fetching water at a trickling mountain stream; white-robed men plowing their small, terraced pieces of land or traveling by donkey to the market to buy their indispensable qat; and children herding goats or caring for each other.
Manakha lies on a southwestern loop that also includes the ancient cities of Taiz, Ibb, Jibla, Kaukaban, and Thula. Often strategically built on top of a rock plateau or mountain range, they offer many dramatic views and points of historic and cultural interest, ranging from the Queen Arwa mosque in Jibla to the fascinating traditional markets in and around Taiz, where unveiled women proudly display their colorful dresses

Gold Canadian Maple Leafs
Monex, the country's leading precious metals investment firm, is pleased to offer gold investors the beautiful, pure gold Canadian Maple Leaf...a legal-tender bullion coin known worldwide for its purity, refinement and beauty.
Since its initial release in 1979 as a pure, 24 karat gold alternative to the 22 karat South African Krugerrand, the only other one troy ounce gold bullion coin available at the time, the gold Maple Leaf has become the standard of quality against which all other bullion coins are measured.
Canadian Maple Leaf gold coins are known and respected throughout the world because of the impeccable standards of quality mandated by the Royal Canadian Mint. The Royal Canadian Mint's insistence upon flawless planchets, the pure gold blanks from which gold coins are struck, has led to an enviable reputation among demanding investors and collectors. Its impeccable quality, pleasing design, and fine gold purity (at ninety-nine point nine-nine percent pure gold, or "four-nines" fine) has made the Canadian Maple leaf one of the preferred gold coins of investors around the world. In fact, the one troy ounce gold Canadian Maple Leaf has been in continuous production longer than any other pure gold bullion coin.
Each gold Maple Leaf coin features the image of Great Britain's Queen Elizabeth the second, along with the denomination and date of issue, on the obverse side...and an image of Canada's national symbol, the maple leaf (from which the coin derives its name), on the reverse side, along with the name of the country and the level of purity of the gold, listed in both English and French.
The Canadian Maple Leaf is currently available from Monex in four different sizes:
The classic one troy ounce coin, which measures 30mm in diameter with a thickness of 2.87mm, makes the coin approximately the same size as an extra thick United States half-dollar. The coin carries a face value of 50 Canadian Dollars. One ounce Canadian Maple Leaf gold coins are offered by Monex in units of 10 one-ounce coins, and are available for both personal delivery and through the exclusive Monex ATLAS program, and the coins make a wonderful addition to any investment portfolio and are also available for IRA investment.
Canadian Maple Leaf coins are also available from Monex in fractional sizes. The half-ounce coin has a diameter of 25mm, and is 2.23mm thick, which gives this coin similar dimensions to a double-stacked United States quarter, and carries a face value of 20 Canadian Dollars. The quarter-troy-ounce Canadian Maple Leaf coin has a diameter of 20mm, with a thickness of 1.78mm, and a face value of 10 Canadian Dollars. The tenth-ounce gold Maple Leaf has a diameter of 16mm and a thickness of 1.13mm, making it comparable in size to a United States dime, and carries a face value of 5 Canadian Dollars. All fractional gold Canadian Maple Leaf coins are available from Monex for personal delivery only, in units of 20 coins.
In 2007, the Royal Canadian Mint surprised the numismatic world by creating and issuing two very interesting variants of the classic pure gold Maple Leaf one-ounce coin -- the world's largest and purest gold coin ever produced -- a 100 kilogram, or 220 pound, "five-nines" fine (or ninety-nine point nine-nine-nine percent pure gold), one million dollar (Canadian) face value coin (although the gold content was worth over TWO million dollars (U.S.) at the time).
In 2007, the Royal Canadian Mint also produced a special new "five-nines" fine, one-ounce Gold Maple Leaf with a $200 Canadian face value, the highest face value of any one-ounce legal tender gold bullion coin.
Gold Canadian Maple Leaf coins are internationally recognized, and they are bought and sold anywhere in the world gold is traded...and the government of Canada guarantees the purity, weight and legal tender value of every gold Maple Leaf coin.
With their classical beauty...unsurpassed purity...legal tender status...and backing by the Canadian government...gold Canadian Maple Leaf coins provide investors and collectors with coins that can be both a secure and internationally-recognized addition to a well-diversified investment portfolio.
